Celebration Dance from "The Tribe"

Playpak One

'The Tribe'

Why the 'Tribe'? Annette used "The Tribe" as a 'warmup' in Drama Workshops. These were often conducted in schools with a high percentage of migrant students with poor English. Stripping away modern life, it enabled students to improve their aural language skills re-create their world, discuss the motivation of the characters and re-discover their attitude to human values.

The Leader's son is MALOO

Against his father's wishes, Maloo does not take part in the hunt. He can see the need to breed animals, to grow crops and preserve food.

His sister is BARTA

BARTA likes to hunt, dance and sing.
She feels that the women in the Tribe should have an equal say in major decisions.

Students elect to become: One of the nine main Characters-Directors-Dancers-Musicians-Craftpersons

The teacher/facilitator follows step-by-step Lesson plans, aiding the imagination through 'guided imagery' and may elect to use exercises such as - Relaxation- Speech -Movement

Since the scenario takes place at a time of Pre-civilization all musical instruments, props and costumes are made from FOUND objects

Each actor creates his or her role according to the Character Profile. He then presents the Character in mime. Then guided by the Directors, duologues with other characters are created until all have inter-acted. The Central Conflict arises when the Leader is killed while hunting and a new leader must be elected. Time for discussion is given at the end of each session, so that the students make decisions and offer helpful advice to each other. The facilitator guides the group through the scenes according to the lesson plans.

A performance is optional.

Guided Imagery

Read by teacher or student, this prepares the group for the next scene.

"Please lie down comfortably and close your eyes. Imagine you are a man, woman or child belonging to this tribe. The men are preparing weapons for the hunt. Young women are collecting water from the river or collecting berries. Children are playing. Where are you? This tribal ground is your home. What does it look like? Could you draw a map of the area? What kind of vegetation grows in this land? Are there rules and laws of conduct? Do you play games? Dance and sing? Do you tell stories and act out the dramatic events? ......it has been a busy day and you are pleased to draw near the protective fire...now, make yourself comfortable under the animal skins as you prepare to sleep. You may wonder about the mysterious and marvellous aspects of nature as you gaze into the night sky........the twinkling lights above you.......breathing in and out.........in and out..........it seems that the whole world breathes together as you drift off to sleep." (when the group is ready) "Please open your eyes and slowly bring yourself back into the room. Take a big slow breathe-yawn and stretch and sit up."

The teacher now asks the group for their impressions and these are noted in their work books.
